Director's Statement
“Theatre is like church.” a Director I truly and deeply admire said to me when I was a teenager growing up in Chicago. As a Queer Latina who grew up in church, and has since deconstructed religious indoctrination, this concept blew my mind. Since then, I come to this simple notion often in my artistic philosophy. The theatre I create and strive to be part of is a safe gathering of all types of folks of different backgrounds. It's where we seek to experience testimony (a well-told story) that can never be exactly replicated… together. And when we leave, that testimony made us view ourselves and the world a little differently.
As a Director, I hope to guide stories with kindness, collaboration, and confidence that can empower other theatre artists. In my rehearsals I am playful, well organized, and lead with a gentle but firm hand that only a true Arts Educator can. I’m a true believer (to continue the church metaphor) in the power of storytelling. The stories I’m drawn to especially uplift, worship, and celebrate the voices from my BIPOC and Queer communities. I value being a member of Chicago’s vibrant theatre community and I’ll always be quick to sit in the theatre congregation of theatre makers who leave me in awe with their exploration, bravery, and honesty. I aim to do the same with my art.
